Communities
Edinburgh's city centre is home to a range of residential and professional communities which leave a tangible mark on the fabric and authenticity of the Edinburgh World Heritage Site. They include the world of politics, legal services, financial services, retailing, education and the arts. These communities generate the economic and intellectual well being of the city centre and give it its purpose.

The different communities which live and work within the Site reflect the complexity of the economic and social activities in the city centre. It is a fine example of an ancient city in a modern society which has retained its residential vitality.
The city centre has been a tourist destination since at least the middle of the nineteenth century. This popularity in itself creates a management challenge - maintaining the qualities of the Site which underpin the vibrant, living, city centre is vital for the city's continued relevance and for present and future generations.
