A row of old houses stands next to a much taller tenement block in Edinburgh. Steps lead up to a first floor entrance of one of the houses and a wall topped with a wooden fence encloses a yard from the street.

This house (demolished 1904) is referred to by Chambers (Traditions of Edinburgh 1825. Vol 1, page 63) as the "oldest house of present existing in the New Town"... "it was a solitary house in the country for many years before the extension of the city".
