About the image medium
Name
Pencil work
Notes
An art work drawn in the medium of a graphite pencil, which became popular at the end of the eighteenth century when natural black chalks became difficult to obtain.
Until the end of the eighteenth century the word pencil could mean a small brush so 'pencilling' could mean 'colouring' or 'brushwork' as well as drawing.
