Biography
There is little biographical information available about William Channing. He was born in England and it is thought that he was employed as a scene painter at the Theatre Royal in Manchester. When he moved to Edinburgh he continued in this profession at Edinburgh's Theatre Royal. He was a widower and aged 58 when he married 35 year old Mary Baptie in 1866. He died in Leith in 1877 aged 72.
Channing's sketches date from the middle of the 19th Century and their real value lies in their depiction of the Old Town areas and architecture which have since changed or disappeared. Three volumes of his sketches and paintings are held by Edinburgh City Libraries.
