Description

A family group sit beside the fireside in the kitchen of a small cottage. Closest to the cooking range and to the light hanging on the wall, sits an older man who reads from a large book on a small table in front of him. The group listen intently, apart from one small child who has fallen asleep on his mother's knee.

A cottar, or cotter, is an old scots word meaning a married farm labourer who lives in a cottage provided by his employer. This image illustrates verse 12 from Robert Burns' The Cotter's Saturday Night:
The cheerfu' supper done, wi' serious face,
They, round the ingle, form a circle wide;
The sire turns o'er, wi' partriarchal grace,
The big ha'-Bible, ance his father's pride:
His bonnet rev-rently is laid aside,
His lyart haffets wearing thin an' bare;
Those strains that once did sweet in Zion glide,
He wales a portion with judicious care;
And "Let us worship God!" he says, with solemn air.
