About the artist
Name
Faed, John
Biography
John Faed was born in 1819 in Barley Mill, Kirkcudbrightshire. His father, James, was a tenant farmer, miller and engineer. John was the eldest of six children. All but one of the siblings showed great artistic flair and John's brother, Thomas, gained most professional success as an artist.
John Faed pursued his artistic talent from an early age. In 1839, he moved to Edinburgh to study painting and life drawing. He began to paint narrative pictures, depicting scenes from the Bible and Shakespeare and Scottish subjects inspired by the writing of Sir Walter Scott and Robert Burns.
In 1857, Faed travelled throughout the Middle East, visiting Jerusalem, Cairo and journeying up the Nile. He moved to London in 1864, but returned to Scotland in 1869, settling in Ardmore, near Gatehouse of Fleet where he built a house. After his wife died in 1897, he continued to paint, and even to tutor a pupil. He died at his home in 1904.
