Description

A view looking along a narrow street of shops and flats in Edinburgh. The nearest building on the left is six stories high and towers over its neighbouring buildings. Many of the shop fronts display their wares and have signs above the windows including, 'Milk and Cream' and 'Boots and Shoes'.

St Mary's Wynd dates back to medieval times when it was used as the south approach to the Netherbow. It was named after the chapel and hospice of St Mary which stood on its west side. In 1867, the wynd was widened by removing all the buildings on the east side and it was renamed St Mary's Street.
