Description

A view looking along a narrow street of dilapidated housing in Edinburgh. The houses are all at different levels and have tall chimney stacks. The nearest house on the left has wooden panelling and a rickety staircase leading up to an entrance above ground level. A wheelbarrow is parked in the alley beside the wall.

Plainstanes Close in the High Street has had various names having been called after different residents over the years. It was called Plainstanes Close in 1718 to describe the flagstones it was paved with, rather than setts.
