Old Playhouse Close, Canongate. Partly demolished. Tunnel on right still standing (1902)

Description

A view looking towards an arched walkway through old stone tenement buildings in Edinburgh. The street beyond the close is glimpsed through the archway. A tall round turret with a peaked cap roof projects from the wall. There are many small windows and a sign from a window on the right advertises, 'Lodging'.

Two closes formed the pair of Playhouse Closes in the Canongate area of Edinburgh. They gave access to the town's first public theatre, or Playhouse, which opened in 1747.
