Title
The Marshes of Pinsk. November 1915
Description
"The Kaiser said last Spring: "When the leaves fall you'll have peace" They have!"

"The German advance on the east, September - October 1915, in Poliesie region, was brought to a stop by the treacherous marshes, a dreary region of swamp and woodland, which swallowed up guns and ammunition wagons, horses, carts and equipment, and made entrenchments impossible. The peasants of the district organized themselves into fifty guerilla detachments, and, by their local knowledge of the paths in the the impassible swamps, "where a single false step may mean death, "led the Germans into ambuscades, cut off their transport, killed various detachments, and actually captured and carried off two generals and other officers of the staff of the 82nd German Division at Neval."
