Title
German Chivalry to Wounded Officers
Description
"They kicked us from behind all down the street."
"It was thought that the Germans with their respect and sanctity for the military caste would show courtesy in all their dealings with officer prisoners. But the Allies had yet to learn another phase of the astounding German character. For our prisoners were treated in a manner that would have shamed the old slave traders of a century ago. They were herded into trucks where they lingered with wounds undressed in a filthy condition. Days went by and their food was of the most casual order. In some cases they were hoarded in pens like sheep, with no shelter from the biting winter winds and the rain. In Germany itself many of our men were jeered at as they were marched in all their misery through the streets. Any exhibition of humanity was sternly suppressed, and Belgium is full of terrible tales of the slow massacre of our prisoners."
