Sir William Fettes (1750-1836), a former Lord Provost of Edinburgh who lost his only son in 1815, bequeathed £166,000, then a very large sum of money, for ‘the maintenance, education and outfit of young people’. Fettes College, designed by the architect David Bryce, first opened in 1870, educating 53 boys, 40 of whom were foundationers (bursary recipients). It started admitting girls in 1970.
