Title
The Sinking of the Warilda
Description
"No more pronounce My name, thou butcher of the wounded."
"On the 4th of August 1918, at 1.40 in the early morning, the hospital ship Warilda was torpedoed without warning and sunk. The ship was marked in full accordance with the rules of the Geneva Convention, but this did not save her from a dastardly attack. There were 770 souls on board, including wounded soldiers and nurses, and of these 123 were either killed by the explosion or drowned. The nurses worked with the greatest heroism in the dark night to save the wounded and helpless soldiers. No more striking commentary of the dastardly nature of this deed is required than to note that this ship was torpedoed when, for the first time for two years, no German wounded were carried on board. The lying hypocrisy of the German Government in declaring that the ship carried no distinguishing lights is too obvious to call for further proof in view of this more than extraordinary fortuitous circumstance."
