This image has been chosen for the Edinburgh - Past and Present Exhibition by Sandy Crombie, Group Chief Executive, Standard Life - "This picture has so much to say. Architecture, education and Government help define our City. Here we have Playfair's partially completed, Parthenon-like monument to those who died in the Napoleonic Wars, Thomas Hamiltons's Royal High School of Edinburgh, with its columns inspired by the Temple of Theseus and Miralles' home for the Scottish Government, one of the most innovative designs of its time" Sandy Crombie.
The Scottish Parliament building at Holyrood was opened in October 2004. It was designed by a Spanish architectural practice led by Enric Miralles and his wife Benedetta Tagliabue in conjunction with the Scottish company RMJM. The project has been the source of much controversy, principally on the subjects of its cost and appearance. The building is open to members of the public.
Calton Hill is situated at the east end of Princes Street in Edinburgh. It rises to a height of 108 metres and is another of the city's hills created by volcanic activity. Several monuments stand on the hill. Most prominent amongst these are the Nelson Monument, built in the shape of a telescope, and the unfinished National Monument, modelled on the Parthenon in Athens.
