Light from skylights and a glass chandelier illuminate the grand hall of the Royal College of Physicians. Pillars support a wall with an ornamental frieze. On the lower level behind the pillars are framed pictures.

The Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, an organisation principally concerned with the postgraduate training and examination of doctors, is based on Queen Street. The main building was designed by Thomas Hamilton for the RCPE and completed in 1844. The RCPE has expanded its premises beyond Hamilton's building, acquiring property on both sides including number 8 Queen Street, built by Robert Adam in 1770-1 for Baron Orde. Although part of Hamilton's original design the hall was extended in 1865 by David Bryce.
