The opening of the Gladhouse water works was a grand affair. Prayers were offered by Rev. James Cameron Lees D.D, the minister of St. Giles, Dean of the Order of the Thistle and one of Her Majesty's Chaplains for Scotland. The water was officially turned on by the Lord Provost, Sir Thomas Jamieson Boyd as well as representatives of Leith and Portobello councils and the partners of the firm J & A Leslie and Reid who were responsible for the construction of the lake, to name but a few.
