Sir John Watson Gordon was born in Edinburgh in 1788. He studied at the trustees Academy and after an initial focus on historical and genre painting he became an accomplished portrait artist. Following the death in 1823 of Henry Raeburn he became the foremost Scottish portrait painter. In 1826 he adopted the name Gordon to distinguish himself from other eminent family members, especially his brother George, also a successful portrait artist. Many famous Scots sat for him, including Sir David Brewster and Walter Scott. He became president of the RSA, was knighted and appointed Queen's Limner for Scotland in 1850. He became a Royal Academician in 1850/51. He died in Edinburgh in 1864.
