Ross Fountain and Edinburgh Castle

Description

Trees surround the the Ross Fountain which is enclosed by a flower bed and small hedge in Princes Street Gardens. Water flows over the figures of mermaids. Above the cascade are three female figures. A female figure stands at the apex of the fountain. Edinburgh Castle can be seen in the distance.

The Ross Fountain was installed in West Princes Street Gardens in 1872. It was cast near Paris, France in the Durenne ironworks at Haute-Marne in the early 1860's. It was exhibited at the Great Exhibition in London in 1862 and was purchased for Edinburgh by Daniel Ross a local gun maker and philanthropist.
