It is unclear fron Daniel Somerville's annotation whether he is referring to the Tolbooth which was Edinburgh's administrative centre and prison, and was also the site of many executions. It stood immediately to the west of St Giles Cathedral, and was demolished in 1817 or Calton Gaol designed by Archibald Elliot as an alternative to Edinburgh's historic Tolbooth. It was located immediately to the south of Regent Road, overlooking Waverley Station. The prison was opened in 1817.
