Title
Fox Tirpitz Preaching to the Geese
Description
"You see, my little Dutch Geese, I am fighting for the freedom of the seas."

"The geese are surely duck in the drawing, but the artist must have excellent reasons for his title. Note how admirably he has combined the features of the fox and the likeness of the Admiral. In spite of their conviction that Tirpitz was the German most responsible for the murderous submarine policy of his Government, the English caricaturists treated the Admiral with comparative leniency. This cartoon appeared shortly after the Dutch ships, the 'Batavia V' and the 'Zaanstroom,' bound for the Thames, were waylaid by a German submarine, captured and taken into Zeebrugge, on the ground that the carried cargoes of food for England. The 'Medea' was overhauled, searched, and sunk by gunfire off Beachy Head. Admiral Von Tirpitz resigned his post of Naval Secretary of State 13 March 1916."
