Mount Fuji is Japan's highest mountain, at 3776m (12,388 feet), and is located in the centre of the country. It is a symbol of Japan and since ancient times artists have frequently referred to it in their poetry or depicted its grandeur in visual artworks. Also, the mountain is the object of worship as a sacred place. This is because the Japanese tend to feel the sublime in nature, so that mountains or waterfalls can become the subject of worship.
