Notes
Since the late nineteenth century pictorial cards have been posted in the UK in the established format of 89 x 140 mm (3 ½ x 5 ½ in). The use of photographs in mass production was taken up by firms such as George Washington Wilson and Valentine's in Scotland and postcards became not only a cheap means of communication, but popular collectibles. Topographical postcards were the most common, but the range of subjects covered grew at the height of their popularity in the early twentieth century.
