Location
Edinburgh and Scottish Collection
Newington is a residential area in the 'South Side' of Edinburgh, bordered by the Grange to the west and Prestonfield to the east. The area gained popularity as a pleasant, rural residential location from the late 18th century onwards. Considerable development took place in the first quarter of the 19th century following Dr Benjamin Bell's acquisition of the estate and the construction of his home, Newington House, in 1805. The area has been home to both famous and infamous individuals, including the artist D. O. Hill, known for his pioneering photographic work, and Dr Robert Knox, the surgeon associated with the Burke and Hare case.
