Description
"This brutal treatment of a boy of Maastricht by Major Tolle of the German army was attested by an eye-witness: Major Tolle, Chief of the German Landstrum near the Belgium-Holland frontier, saw a boy waving his cap, and imagined he was signalling. He thereupon seized him, thrashed him, and had him conducted by two soldiers to the guardroom, where he again thrashed him unmercifully. Then ascertaining that the lad was Dutch and came daily into Belgium to school, he dismissed him with the caution, 'Run away quickly or I will have you shot.' These facts are vouched for in a signed document in De Telegraaf, 27 October 1915."
