The first British people arrived in Japan in 1859 and mainly lived in the Yokohama settlement in the Kanagawa Prefecture. In the nineteenth century, Yokohama was a prosperous settlement in Japan. Yokohama was a convenient place due to its proximity to Tokyo, Kamakura, Hakone as well as having captivating views of Mt.Fuji. Hakone is still a popular resort with the Japanese because of its hot spring.
The view was seen from the custom house. The red brick building on the left side was the harbour office and the white building was the meteorological station. The middle building on the right side was the storeroom of Jardine Matheson Holdings Ltd.
