The recurring skeleton figure, in this instance dressed as a waiter, presents Kaiser Wilhelm and the Crown Prince with a bill for the costs of Verdun. The Kaiser is troubled by the bill and puts his hand up for it to be taken away from him. Hundreds of thousands of men died fighting in the Battle of Verdun alone. Raemaekers charges German leaders with the responsibility of paying the price for attacking Verdun.
