Damselflies and their cousins the Dragonflies are the aerial predators of the insect world. Their presence indicates good environmental quality. Their eggs hatch out into voracious aquatic larvae, ambush predators which will eat anything slightly smaller than they are; emerging from the water the following year as winged adults.
They can be seen around the north side of Duddingston Loch in summertime.
