George Watson's College, formerly George Watson's Hospital, was founded in 1741. It was originally situated opposite George Heriot's Hospital, now George Heriot's School, on Lauriston Place. It moved a short way to the west to the Merchant Maiden Hospital building when its original site was taken over by the Royal Infirmary in 1879. The school moved again in 1932 to its current site on Colinton Road.
William Adam designed the original George Watson's Hospital and it was incorporated by David Bryce in his 1870s design for the Royal Infirmary building which took over the Lauriston Place site. The Royal Infirmary moved out to Little France and the Adam building has since been demolished in the work to redevelop the site as Quartermile.
