The John Hope Gateway at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, is a distinctive visitor welcome building at the west gate of the gardens. It was completed in 2009 and was designed to complement its surroundings and to house exhibitions, education, dining, retail and events.
The Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh, is situated ¾ of a mile north of Princes Street, almost immediately to the north of the Stockbridge Colonies. Originating as a 17th century 'physic garden' located near Holyrood Abbey the gardens moved to their current site in Inverleith in 1820. The gardens expanded over the subsequent decades, incorporating Inverleith House and its grounds in the late 1870s. Notable features of the garden include the Victorian Temperate Palm House, the tallest of its kind in Britain, the Rock Garden with its range of Alpine plants, and the Chinese Hillside section with its outstanding collection of Chinese plants.
