Sheila and John Mitchell did a lot of work in recording the pre-1955 inscriptions in Scottish churchyards. Their services to genealogy are commemorated by this bench in the Archivists' Garden at the National Records of Scotland.
The inscription says:
'John Fowler Mitchell C.I.E. 1886-1984
Sheila Macbeth Mitchell M.B.E. 1890-1994
Together they enriched family history by recording old gravestones.'
