Appleton Tower was designed in 1963 by Reiach and Hall, and opened in 1968. It was named after Sir Edward Appleton (1892-1965), the Nobel Prize-winning physicist and principal and vice-chancellor of Edinburgh University.

The refurbishment will include the creation of a new rooftop extension and landscaped main entrance as well as the recladding to improve the environmental performance and safety of the building.
