George Meikle Kemp, born in 1795, was a self-taught architect architect and draughtsman. Born into a shepherding family he worked in Glasgow and London and travelled in France and Belgium before settling in Edinburgh where he worked as an architect's draughtsman. He won the competition to design a memorial to Sir Walter Scott, but drowned in the Union Canal in March 1844 before the completion of his work. This piece must therefore be amongst Hill and Adamson's earlier works, and have been taken not long before the subject's death.
