George Moir's work as an advocate led to his appointment as sheriff of Ross and Cromarty, in 1859 he became High Sheriff of Stirlingshire. Moir also pursued an academic career and was chosen as Professor of Scots Law at Edinburgh University in 1864. During his lifetime Moir was well-known as a literary critic and contributed to the Edinburgh Review.
