Description

Round domed monument to Sir George MacKenzie of Rosehaugh in Greyfriars kirkyard, Edinburgh. The monument has a door and several niches round its walls. It is sited in a graveyard with other headstones and monuments. A row of tenement housing can be seen in the background as well as the corner of Greyfriars Church.

Greyfriars Kirkyard, or Graveyard, is the burial ground of Greyfriars Kirk in Edinburgh. It houses the graves of many notable historical figures including the poet Allan Ramsay, the geologist James Hutton and the architect William Adam. In 1679 several hundred Covenanters were imprisoned in the Kirkyard awaiting trial.

Sir George MacKenzie was a Scottish Lawyer and founder of the Advocates Library, Edinburgh. He gained the nickname 'Bloody MacKenzie' for his fierce prosecution of the Scottish Presbyterian Covenanters. His imposing tomb stands in Greyfriars Kirkyard, and his ghost is said to haunt this area.
