The Royal Victoria Hospital began life as a private residence, Craigleith House, which was converted in 1894 into a hospital for the treatment of tuberculosis. It was demolished in the 1960's and new wards built to provide care for the elderly. In June 2012 the Medicine for the Elderly services were transferred from the Royal Victoria Hospital to the new purpose built Royal Victoria Building at the Western General Hospital.
