The Craigleith Poorhouse was established in 1868. From 1914 until 1919, it was taken over as a military hospital and renamed the 2nd Scottish General Hospital. After World War One it reverted back to the Craigleith Poorhouse again, until the local authority took it over in 1929, opened it to the general public and renamed it the Western General Hospital.
