In 1849 the Reverend John Alexander White, minister of St James' Church, started an Episcopal day school, as an alternative to the Presbyterian-controlled parish schools, in the old chapel building in Queen Street. There were 50 pupils in the first year, but the school's popularity grew and new premises with space for 400 pupils, a lending library and a savings club, were built in 1856. This building in turn was replaced by another, built next to it, and a church hall, on its original site, between 1894 and 1898, as seen in this picture. By the start of World War I the congregation could no longer support the school and it was transferred to the local education authority, which ran it until 1924.
