Fergusson's poetry was a key influence on the work of Robert Burns. Burns in fact paid for a headstone for the poet's grave in the Canongate Burial Ground, and penned the memorial verse inscribed on it. Fergusson's life was tragically short, ending in the Edinburgh's Bedlam, situated to the east of what is now Forrest Road. He died, aged only 24, following a period of severe depression and a bad head injury.
