Title
In the Hands of the Receiver
Description
"This admirable cartoon has many happy touches, but none excels that in the title over the shop. A better sign for the profession of the German monarchy than 'Hohenzollern Butchery' could not be invented. The listless attitude of the Crown Prince within is possibly due to a reflection on the number of carcases he threw away at Verdun. 'Closed for Bankruptcy' runs the announcement on the window, and one of the provisions of the Peace Treaty was a searching examination of the Kaiser before an 'Official Receiver,' by which act it is hoped to put fear into the heart of royal gamblers. The Kaiser first realised that the time had arrived for him to go out of business at a meeting of the German Staff at Spa on 14th August 1918. Ludendorff, who in July was still convinced that victory was possible, had lost hope and declared that it was impossible to win. The Kaiser then agreed that the first opportunity must be taken to obtain peace. He must have known that it was the beginning of the end. He was putting up the shutters of the German Empire."
