Autumn Leaves
Description
"'Crowns are falling like Autumn leaves.' - The Prime Minister, in a speech, October 1918."
"When the days through which we have lived have passed into history and can be viewed retrospectively they will seem full of miracles. Nothing was more amazing than the sudden collapse of that iron ring of the enemy. Ferdinand of Bulgaria set the fashion in abdication, the Emperor Karl wrote to the Kaiser saying he could carry on no longer and was forced to conclude an armistice with the Italians, and thus went the tottering empire to pieces, and with it the chief partner of the German Empire. It was as if an October wind had swept across Europe, and by November it had become so searching that dozens of petty kings and princes were looking for lodging in Switzerland and other neutral countries. The forest of monarchs was stripped bare by the storm of wrath that arose from failure and the disappointment of millions who for years had been promised the sweets of long-deferred victory."
