Title
The New Crusaders' First Sight of Jerusalem
Description
"On the 9th November 1917 the British troops occupied Ascalon, the ruined city which had been the last conquest of Richard Coeur-de-Lion, whence he looked upon the Holy City he was never to gain. On 9th December Jerusalem was isolated and the enemy sent out a parlementaire and made his surrender; by evening the British patrols were in the city. A current Arab prophecy foretold that a deliverer would come from the West, who would bear the name of a prophet of God, and would enter Jerusalem on foot and would not appear until the Nile flowed into Palestine. It is somewhat singular that General Allenby's name in Arabic signifies 'Prophet; and that his troops brought with them water from Egypt."
