The Rev. Dhanjibhai Nauroji was born in Gujarat in 1822 to a Parsi family. From 1831 he was educated in Bombay at a mission school. He became, according to his short autobiography, the first modern convert to Christianity from the Zoroastrian religion. His baptism in 1839 provoked significant protest from Bombay's Parsi community. In 1843 he travelled to Scotland via the middle-east, europe and England, arriving shortly after the Disruption. He attended an early meeting of the Free Church of Scotland, and met its leader Dr Thomas Chalmers. He stayed in Scotland for just over three years, attending the Free Church Theological College. He was ordained by the Free Presbytery of Edinburgh in a ceremony at Canonmills Hall at the end of 1846. Shortly after this the Rev. Nauroji returned to India where he worked as a missionary until his death in 1908 aged 86.
