After the canal closed for commercial use in 1933 there were many suggestions for what to do with the canal, including one to drain it and make it into a roadway. After many proposals it was announced in 2002 that the area would be redeveloped with luxury apartments, offices, bars and restaurants. The next phase of construction work, the new Boroughmuir High School, has a projected completion date of 2016.
