Morningside was once a village on a main road south from Edinburgh. In the 1850s it was no more than a row of thatched houses and a blacksmith's forge and beyond the Jordan Burn was open countryside. Nowadays it is predominantly residential with a collection of small traditional shops, restaurants, supermarkets, a library and hospitals.

In the grounds of the Church at the end of Nile Grove once stood the original Toll House (259 Morningside Road). Before that the toll house for the Edinburgh Boundaries was in Tollcross. The house has been rebuilt in Braid Road.
