Morningside was once a village on a main road south from Edinburgh. In the 1850s it was no more than a row of thatched houses and a blacksmith's forge and beyond the Jordan Burn was open countryside. Nowadays it is predominantly residential with a collection of small traditional shops,restaurants,supermarkets,a library and hospitals.

Morningside House c1789-1895 stood on the site now occupied by Marks and Spencer. One of the owners David Deuchar is reported to have "discovered" Henry Raeburn .
