Morningside was once a village on a main road south from Edinburgh. In the 1850s it was no more than a row of thatched houses and a blacksmith's forge and beyond the Jordan Burn was open countryside. Nowadays it is predominantly residential with a collection of small traditional shops,restaurants,supermarkets,a library and hospitals.

"A milestone, "One Mile from Tollcross" is embedded into the wall, north of the corner of Morningside Place and Morningside Road, just before a row of Victorian shops. This was useful in the days of horse and coach".
