Morningside was once a village on a main road south from Edinburgh. In the 1850s it was no more than a row of thatched houses and a blacksmith's forge and beyond the Jordan Burn was open countryside. Nowadays it is predominantly residential with a collection of small traditional shops,restaurants,supermarkets,a library and hospitals.

Bank House [1790] the childhood home to Cosmo Gordon Lang, Archbishop of Canterbury from 1928 to 1943. His father, the Reverend Dr John Marshall Lang,was the minister of Morningside Parish Church between 1868 and 1873.
