Morningside was once a village on a main road south from Edinburgh. In the 1850s it was no more than a row of thatched houses and a blacksmith's forge and beyond the Jordan Burn was open countryside. Nowadays it is predominantly residential with a collection of small traditional shops, restaurants, supermarkets,a library and hospitals.
The Church Hill Theatre, which was originally Morningside Free Church was built by the Edinburgh architect Hippolyte Blanc (1844 - 1917), renowned for his buildings in the Gothic revival style.
Run by the Assembly Rooms, it is a popular venue at the Edinburgh Fringe and it is also the home to many of the city's amateur theatre companies.
The theatre reopened in August 2006 after extensive refurbishment to the public areas including the foyer, café bar area and installation of a new extension.
