Between the 3rd February and the 27th April 2014, Edinburgh's St Andrew Square played host to the travelling art installation 'Field of Light.' The installation, the work of English artist Bruce Munro, consists of 9,500 lighted glass balls on illuminated stalks which gently change colour and cast a glow over the New Town garden.
The aim of the piece is to create an immersive art experience and the public are invited to walk through the exhibition to see the familiar square in a new way. Munro first conceived of the installation when travelling to Uluru in Central Australia and finding inspiration in how light, heat and colour altered the desert landscape. The concept was 10 years in development and was first displayed in the field behind Munro's Wiltshire home. The piece has since illuminated many places on both sides of the Atlantic changing its composition in each location to fit the particular surroundings. The exhibition's residence in St Andrew Square will be the first time the installation has been displayed in an urban setting.
