This image shows the introductory page of a book of postcards published to commemorate the armistice of the First World War. It depicts the train car Supreme Allied Commander Marshal Ferdinand Foch travelled in to meet the delegation of German representatives who would sign the document ending the war. The meeting was held in a remote clearing in the Compiegne forest on a lonely railway line constructed to carry armaments to the front. After the conflict the clearing in which the foes met was turned into a memorial and Foch's train car was preserved. It is a site of particular significance to the French and German people today. As the clearing was far from the British bases of operations it has not become as important a monument in the nation's consciousness.
